Without cross-band repeat, I'd consider a Yaesu FT-7800R. I got one 
for the YL's car, and she likes it. I got mine for $275 used. 

With cross-band repeat, I'd look at the Yaesu FT-8800R, which does 
all the stuff the 7800 does, and has cross-band capabilities. I think
they're a bit pricier.
