[ICOM] SSB power out on 706

Sounds about right for SSB.
Remember - PEP is PEAK Envelope Power - it is the maximum instantaneous
power - not the average power.
A good peak reading wattmeter would show that you hit 100 watts on peak -
but if the range of your voice is 40 dB dynamic range, you power would vary
from about 0.01 watt (one hundreth of a watt) to 100 watts.
Even with only a 10 dB dynamic range in your voice the power ratio would be
10 watts to 100 watts.
So 50 watts on your power meter is a very reasonable reading - however you
very well may be overdriving your transmitter! I get about 75 watts when I
go "HEEEEEEELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" into the microphone, but on average, the
meter reads about 40 watts for 100 watts PEP for my voice.
The dynamics of your voice are different than mine - you might have more or
less indicated power - but your voice peaks still will hit 100 watts on SSB
if your transmitter is adjusted correctly - but your power indication might
be 10 watts or 40 watts depending on your voice.

Subject: [ICOM] SSB power out on 706
I was testing out an Icom 706MKII I got recently, and the power out on SSB
looks low. It is putting out about 90 watts on RTTY and FM, but when I go
to SSB, using a PEP wattmeter (requiring 12 volts) it is only reading about
40 watts. Is that normal for SSB, or is it running low? I know that power
out will look low on a regular watt meter on SSB, which is why I was using
the PEP wattmeter.
If the power is low on SSB only, any ideas as to what could be wrong? I had
the compressor on, and the mic gain was set on 7. I was doing the testing
into a dummy load, so there is no problem with SWR.
