Hello Brian et al,
I have read with interest all the postings so far on this subject and
have one other suggestion that might be worth considering too. THAT
IS.... providing the radio can handle it!
That is consider using the AH-4 out at the feedpoint of the G5RV. I
know it is another piece of equipment that needs to be purchased and
installed but will do the job much better than an inbuilt ATU in the
transceiver. As others have said, the G5RV can exhibit ratios of 5:1 or
greater even on bands within it's quoted range! The internal tuners of
most rigs just wont handle this but the AH-4 (or other remote L match
tuners) will.
I use just such a setup myself for portable operations, I have the 102
foot G5RV hanging up and connect the AH-4 at the end of the ladder line
where the coax on a 'usual' G5RV would terminate. The AH-4 matches the
antenna nicely, provides a 1:1 match to the rig on every band always and
is quick to tune with the press of a button. All in all, pretty
foolproof.
My G5RV will even cover 160 metres although has a bit of a drop in
efficiency.
This setup goes like a rocket on 80, 40, 30 and 20 metres and even quite
well on 6m.
Of course it will work on the higher HF bands above 20 but I don't use
them much.
So that is another suggestion if, of course, the transceiver you are
using is equipped to work with the AH-4. I use a 706 with mine.
Best regards to all,
Des - VK3DMP.
