[ICOM] Filters for 746

Bob,

In addition to the Icom filters, International Radio
(http://www.qth.com/inrad/) offers a good selection of filters for the
746. One advantage of theirs is that the response curves of most are
shown on their web site. In many cases they are less expensive than the
OEM and often have steeper slopes. I've had good luck with them in some
applications, including an Icom radio.

My personal filter preference is to have a 1800 Hz (narrow SSB filter)
for fast CW tuning, and then a 400 or 500 Hz for close in operating. I
have one rig with just a 250 Hz filter and find that tight for tuning.
If I just had one, I'd go for the 400 or 500, even though the tighter
ones sound like they'd be great. I agree 9 MHz first, but you may find
that you eventually want the 455 kHz filter as well, to limit internally
generated noise from the IF strip after the first filter. I haven't
tried that receiver so can't say for sure, but others may be able to
chip in.

GL and enjoy.
