Mac,
Concerning compression, you have to play not only with the Mic gain, but
also with Drive level. Check different combinations of them both and you'll
get a perfect signal, both compressed and with an excellent audio in the
same time. The SM-20 matches the 775 perfectly.
Honestly, I don't have any flickering neither at low, nor at high, altough
as virtually all 775s do, my radio also delays the backlight at start up
sometimes.
