Gareth,

I've had both.  If you're not planning to go mobile and have only a passing interest in VHF/UHF then go for the IC-718.  It has a solid reputation. Far far easier to navigate than the 706 series, much more convenient size.  The 718's limitations include no twin pass band tuning (don't recall the 706 having it either), a loud relay for CW (but was not that annoying for me), and limit of only 1 filter.   With that said, I had a 718 at two different times and regret selling both as they made great portable desktop rigs.
