Stan you do not tell us if the antenna mount has any kind of ground return to the vehicle.  Mag mounts and HF are almost worthless.  For a VHF antenna, you have at least capacity coupling for the antenna ... while at HF you have almost nil.

Bet things would improve if you had a good ground from the mount.  I have run my IIg and Hustlers for 20/40/17 and never had any kind of heat problem.
