[ICOM] Re Icom Issue

I have an Icom 756 that I bought used in August 1998. It has never given me
a bit of trouble. The many Hams I know with the original 756 have not had
the issue described below. Nor have I heard it mentioned among the Hams I
know who use Icom equipment. Which is 'not' to say it is untrue, but it does
make me wonder if the issue is perhaps "inflated to a higher level" than it
should be?
Is it perhaps caused by user errors or is it a factory flaw that lurks,
waiting, and then ZAP! A done deal, not "if", but "when"?
I would appreciate the "facts", preferably from owners of the original
Icom 756 with experience. However, all with factual based input are very
welcome!

Message sent to Duane from interested buyer:
Yesterday I spent a good part of the day doing what research I could into
the 756 vs. 756 Pro. Comparing the sets and reading everything I could
find. They both sound like good radios (better than anything I've ever
had), but the earlier "Plain Jane" one has one big problem or issue. It
tends to develop "blue horizontal lines" in the display screen that makes it
difficult to read (one man said his had 12 lines). Occasionally, leaving
the set on 24/7 will clear it up, but not often. From what I read, it's
less a matter of "if" it develops the lines, but "when" it will. Icom no
longer has any displays in stock as Sanyo who manufactured them no longer
makes them. Icom says they will "try" to repair existing displays at 250.00
a pop, which you pay whether they're successful or not (and apparently most
of the time they're not successful). A lot of bad feelings towards Icom out
there over this "issue". So, if I had a choice to make, it would be the
"Pro".
