Although I haven't A/B'd the IC-7800, I must agree with Dave, assuming
it's price tag makes for a better radio. I understand that the early
IC-7800s had a problem with phase noise covering up weak signals and that
they have corrected that problem.
It seems that nothing much can be done to improve the transmitter (other
than eliminate key clicks on CW that many of today's rigs have). I'm
happy to see that Icom appears to be working on improving the receiver,
with the latest improvement being the addition of narrower roofing
filters in the IC-7800 (which is an old technology, BTW).
