Intermod (was: RE: [ICOM] Query)

Right on, Adam.

Yep, the "tuned" front end would go a long
way toward major reduction of the intermod
problem.

The big question is how much might it cost
to add those varactor-tuned multi-stage
preselector sections to cover 118 - 500 MHz
and beyond!!

Just as a W.A.G., I'd imagine it would at least
double the cost of our ham rigs. How many
of us would be willing to foot THAT bill???

Ham (or any) radio equipment is similar to just
about anything else. It is always a compromise.
Ultimate performance vs ultimate cost is always
the decision the manufacturer must make. No
matter what that decision, some customers or
potential customers will be unhappy with the
decision that was made.

As for me, the features of the 2710 and 2720
(even if I have to add $65 for a notch filter),
plus the availability of service and tech help if
needed make them my preference.

I have been an Icom user since 1972,
starting with IC-21 and IC-20 and some
30 total rigs to date.

Hi Mike,

Well, I have not owned any amateur FM mobile or portable gear since 1988.
All my VHF and UHF radios are Icom PMR units, programmed on a few amateur
frequencies (yes, Geraldine, it's legal) such as our local club repeater. I
have the H16, U16, V100, U400, V200 and U200. The HT's have a -65 dB EIA
intermod spec, and the mobiles -70 dB. They all have multi-stage
varactor-tuned preselectors.

I can drive around the Vancouver city centre during a business day, and not
hear any intermod or cross-mod at all (even in carrier-squelch mode).

At present, I do not have a mobile radio installed in my vehicle. Maxie does
not care for the racket coming out of the speaker. <g>

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ
