Beg to differ, Mac.
Yes, if you crank the gain all the way up on a wide coverage receiver
(letting in every possible signal) it will be MUCH harder to avoid some
intermod.
However, THIS particular model (the IC-2720) has been shown, in a number of
reviews, both user and scientific, to have higher than normal issues in this
regard.
And the -2720 is not the only one. To a lesser extent, the IC2100 2m only
rigs (that receive all of VHF-hi band) also had this reputation. I've seen
it's "increased sensitivity" (as advertised) by the fact that it picks up 4
different NOAA weather freqs from my town, where my (direct competitor)
Yaesu 2600 only gets the one in my town. The flip side is that, no matter
how you tweak the settings, you CAN'T use that increased sensitivity. I
work FM simplex that he can't hear, because if he turns the squelch down,
the intermod rolls in. If he turns it up, the weak ones don't break
squelch.
My point is, there is some truth to the statement "all Dc-daylight" rigs
will have some intermod problems". But there's also some truth to the
reviews that a couple of Icom's recent 2m and dual-band rigs are "too" good
in the wideband receive area, to the point that a couple of specific models
are all but unusable.

If you want .25 uV sensitivity over broad band,
you WILL get intermod. Wideband coverage
seems to be what MOST buyers want. If you want really tight in a local
area, go find an IC-20 or IC-22 crystal controlled rig. Buy crystals, buy a
tone encoder/decoder, no scan, no DTMF mic, etc.
For god's sake learn to use the attenuator instead of running the damned
thing wide open all the time.
SHEESH. Appliance operators!!!
Yayhoo and Kenmore are all the same.

Hello,
Here are some eHam reviews of the 2720:
---------------------------------------
Reviews: 14 Average rating: 2.4/5
"Disastrous intermod problem. OK in rural areas but in big cities almost
useless."
"POS - Junk. Don't waste your good hard earned money! Intermod out the
@#&+........."
"Wish I'd found more reviews on this rig before I bought it. I live in the
sticks and i'm bothered by a police transmitter 15 miles away. The intermod
makes this radio nearly unusable,, shame on you ICOM!"
"Oh this rig i'm sure would be good if you lived in the desert. It suffers
extreme intermod. very poor rejection ,if any."
"What more can I say. I like every thing about this radio except that the
intermod/imaging that you hear makes the radio unusable, bought a 2 meter
intermod filter, Par and it helped. I DO NOT believe that anyone should have
to spend money on filters that should be IN THE RADIO!!."
"My 2720 also has the famed intermod many have complained about. And I'm not
talking a little intermod, it's a lot! I realize any amateur widebanded
radio is going to have moments where it suffers a bit of intermod but this
thing goes on and on with it. In fact, I can't drive anywhere without
receiving intermod at least half the time the thing is on!
My opinion is such that Icom should recall this model and repair the
intermod issue. I'm sure they won't though, and those of us that purchased
them will remember that. The radio has some great features but you'd better
beware of the SEVERE intermod problem if your considering this model."
