I love mine. We have 3 in the family right now, me-wife-daughter. Son in
Iraq don't need one. I have not seen a radio made since that I would trade
it for. Not from ANY of the big-3.
Lets put it this way. A few years ago, ICOM quit making the W32. There was
so much demand for it, they brought it back. Older design or not, I find it
to be just perfect.
For me, I use a Comet BNC-24 whip antenna, a BP-170L with 2200 mah Mi-MH
batteries, and an HM-75 mic. I clip the radio to my backpack when me and
the doggie go patrol the mountains. I pull the mic over my shoulder, and I
hike hours without worrying about the battery.
The one downfall - IMHO - the stock BP-173 has too short a lifespan, only
about 4-6 hours when I hike. The combination I listed above gives me MORE
ERP, and over 14 hours of op-time. PLUS - all my rescue gear is AA
batteries, GPS - Camera - beacon strobe, HT, MP3 player. Etc etc....
$300 might be a bit high, but I am not sure about the $$$/yen rate right
now, so it might be right.
Only other thing I can offer is, come hike with me, borrow my wife's W32,
and see for yourself.
