Julio,
I would tell him to connect up his dummy load and adjust the presets to a
flat swr. That gets the tuner to a "known" 50 ohm condition. Then reconnect
his antenna and readjust the presets on all bands for the low swr point.
Maybe set the preset on 15 meters in place of 17 meters. Finally see how it
tunes on 15 meters then. He might want to remove the top cover and make
sure he always retains the capacitors in at least 1/2 mesh. On the AT-500
it was possible on the higher bands to have 2 preset low positions and one
would be with the capacitor almost fully open which was incorrect.
A very common " modification " to the AT-500 was to move all the internal
connections to a single coax connector.
