Hi Sandy,
The following link may be helpful:

The IC-718 probably has a quieter synthesiser than any of the radios you
mentioned, as it uses a newer DDS chipset. The IC-736 has a truly abominable
(and useless) audio notch filter.
The IC-765 is still a very good radio, but it desperately needs the W2ISB
PBT modification. Also, earlier serial numbers (S/N < 3000) exhibit severe
passband ripple in the 9 MHz IF. I ran into this when I did the PBT mod on
my IC-765, back in 1991.
Another point to consider: parts for these older radios are in short supply,
and may be "NLA" in some cases. If you wish to upgrade, you may be best off
with one of the Icom Pro-series DSP-based transceivers; they are still fully
supported.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

I have a nearly new, IC-718 transceiver (with DSP), AT-180 auto tuner and
PS-125 power supply for sale or trade. This combination can be used mobile
or fixed base. All are 9,9 on a scale of 10.0. I am looking for a 736, 746
or 765. Please contact me at sandytex at swbell.net.
All the best,
