I had a similar problem with a TH78 handie from kENWOOD. In that case it was
a leaky electrolytic on the squelch line.
This behavior and the fact that at that time Icom used a lousy brand of
electrolytics that started leaking or drying up and causing all kinds of
malfunctions (re my HM56A mike that wasn't keying the radio, evn though it
wasn't on the keyline) prmpts me to suggest you check the elctrolytics
around the low level audio stages.
I'll have a look at the schematic and let you know what is the likely area.
Hope that Cliff Holland will show up. What he doesn't know on Icom, it's
wotrhless.
