My bet is that this new IC7000 thingie is likely to hit the shelves at
   around $1299 or so.
If one looks at ancient history, the original 756 was deeply
discounted when the PRO arrived. This didn't happen between the PRO II
and III. Actually, I think the days of "closeouts" as we once knew
them are over. Based upon the II to III transition, I would hazard a
guess that coupled with this new 706 price, quantities shipped to the
   dealers are already dropping.
Price war? It is to laugh. Those days are GONE.
The 706 at $950 will look like a real bargoon when the IC7000 hits the
shelves. As for the competition, a higher price implies "better" to
many people. The 706 is about to become an obsolete model. anyway.
There's little risk at the new price. When the IC7000 appears, it will
at least appear beside the other radios like an Acura beside a
Chevette. Want a "cheap" old tec radio? Go to the competition. Want
the future? Its $1299. The 7800 has demonstrated that there are many
folks out there with deep, deep pockets willing to spend it. Its a
   brilliant move.
One other thing. Once you own the market, why would you NOT raise the
   price?
From Icom's perspective raising the price on the 706 was a very smart
thing to do. We as hams may not like it, but... so what?
