Hart, 

I wanted to buy both.  I decided to buy the 706 first as it would operate as
both base and mobile easily.  It turns out I can't afford the 718 as soon as
I had hoped, but the 706 is a great rig and probably has better filtering
than the 718.  It is smaller and will hide under the shelf if I like, or I
can buy the separation cable (usually comes free with them these days) and
just mount the face somewhere.  

The 706 is more versatile and probably a much better radio.  The 718 is a
great basic base rig and is bigger which makes managing controls easier at
the base.

The 706 is the best selling mobile rig of all time (if my information is
correct) and you will not regret getting that one over the 718.
