[ICOM] Mods for IC-2KL

One mod I STRONGLY recommend is to put a fuse on the 40 VDC line going to
your DC-DC converter. I had one DC-DC converter blow, and it took out the
regulator in the 40 VDC power supply too. A simple 1 amp fuse will keep
that from happening. You know how those electrolytic caps are in a
switching power supply. Back then I was in the army and poor. I didn't
want to spend the $$$ to replace the caps. So when it blew, it cost a lot
more.

Also note, the DC-DC converter is no longer available from ICOM. I just
went through and re-capped my IC-2KL, should keep it running for years. You
might consider re-capping it. Not hard, and may save you trouble. Once
that 40 VDC started arching, it really burned stuff! The DC-DC converter
was destroyed!!!

Another mod I did was to rewire the fan so it runs anytime the temp switch
says it is needed. A stock IC-2KL must be in transmit mode before the fan
will run. I figure the amp might not have cooled just because I said OVER.
Since I have my station built in a console (with plenty of cooling) the fan
noise don't make a difference to me.
