That diode is probably a switching diode. This trouble was fairly common. 
The rig would stick in the 6 meter low pass filter and you would draw tons 
of current on HF but no output.
Glad you caught it before other damage occurred. I don't remember the diode 
part number but someone on the list will likely have an original 706 
service manual.

Further to my earlier posting I discovered that RL 6 in the filter board was
>not switching on.  Cause - blown protection diode.
>Removed the diode and now full power has restored with no damage to the
