One thing I have noticed is that the 706 is fairly
deaf compared to the 706MKIIG.  When I had the 706 I
had to use the preamp most of the time, or there
wasn't alot to hear.  I could do without it on low
bands, but on 20 and above it was needed.  The
706MKIIG is almost too sensitive.  Really can't use
the preamp on HF, or you get too much background
noise.  Actually have to use the attenuator if the
band gets too crowded.  Maybe the 706MKII gets it just
right-but then Goldilocks will use that rig and break
it.
