It has been my experience (army field maintenance) that sometimes
field-expedient adjustments do work.
Do you have a second radio that you -TRUST- to be very close to frequency?
You could use that as a signal generator. Like an HT on 0.5w output. Leave
the antenna off the radio you are working on, maybe even put in the
attenuator if you have one to make it a weak signal. Then do the adjustment
and try it out.
If you are careful to note the original position of the control, you can
always return it to the original bad position.
In combat - often enough lives depend on your work. Gary and Mitch were
GREAT helps when I needed it - even from Gulf War-I. (Thanks Gary!). In
your situation, the worst it gets is you are without a radio for a few
weeks. Try it, it is already broke. You might get lucky.
