[ICOM] Best antenna for 706 mobile?

Doug,
I've had great results with the High Sierra 1500 and 706MKIIG. I
consistently get good
signal reports on all bands from 80 through 6 meters. The key to my
success is the location
of the antenna. I have it mounted on the back of my toolbox which is
mounted directly
behind the cab of my Silverado. I positioned it so that the loading coil
is above the roofline.
Now this makes for a tall antenna and with the supplied 6' whip I was
hitting a lot of trees.
I replaced that whip with a 4.5' fiberglass CB whip (Frances) and now
hit a lot fewer trees.
There was a small decrease in 2 to 1 SWR bandwidth with the shortened
whip but signal
reports are as good even on 80 meters. Mount your antenna as high and as
unobstructed
as possible and you'll have the best results.
Paul, N5PS
