Agreed, my 24-AT and 3S-AT get quite warm on extended transmit and on 12v.

  Apparently it is quite normal for the back plate to heat up on receive when
  using the external power jack.  The voltage regulator is attached to the
  back plate.  The radio runs on something like 7.2 volts so the regulator has
  to dissipate a lot of extra heat when running on 13.8volts.  Now you know.
