You are absolutely correct. I did the same on my 761MKIIG. You must not turn the processor on! I have the Signalink SSL1+ also and it works wonderfully. If you need a refresher course on the soundboard settings refer to the article in the Oct. QST 2003.

I opened up the interphase and tweaked the Tx gain
potentiometer (there should be two - one for Rx gain
and othe other for Tx gain) on tune mode until I got
enough power out a fixed setting (about 50 Watts in my
case at pwr level of 6 on the 706MKII). That worked
for me. I would not recommend turning the compressor
on.
