[ICOM] 756 Tested

Hi Bob,

The problem you run into with receivers ("receive-only" boxes) is that
unless you go for a very expensive, exotic instrument, the average
under-$1000 SWL receiver is significantly inferior to the RX part of a
transceiver in the same price range.

What you could do is look for a 756 and fit it with a pair of 500 Hz or 250
Hz CW filters. You will then be able to use it as your main receiver or
transmitter, with the 728 as a secondary. Another good choice is a used
756Pro or Pro2.

I saw the Tokyo HamFair announcement of the FT-2000. Icom may bring out a
transceiver positioned midway between the 756Pro3 and the 7800 - perhaps
200W, mains-powered, with Dual Watch (not dual receivers; that would drive
up the cost, as 2 DSP boards would be required.) Naturally, the new radio
would have IF-DSP as do most of Icom's HF rigs, a spectrum scope and perhaps
a tuned preselector similar to the Digi-Sel in the 7800. The price range
could be $5000 to $6000.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Speaking of stats and radios they had a showing in Japan and the way it
looks the FT1000 series is about to be
replaced:

Wonder what Icom has up *their* sleeve?

I was thinking after looking at your numbers Adam of getting just an Icom
receiver for my 728 and running them as separates instead of buying a whole
new transmitter that way I would get rid of some of the compromises of
putting all that into one box and just get a dedicated receiver.

They are predicting the 1000 series is about to be replaced with a new Yaesu
2000 series rig:

Replacement for the FT-1000 series??

Code may be taking a back seat for now,
but the pioneering spirit that put the code there in the first place is out
front of it all.
