Have you tried measuring the actual voltage delivered to the radio when it 
works and again when it fails?  It could be the voltage is low to begin 
with (long run of small wire?) and it doesn't take much to drop it further 
below limits.

If the voltage seems low (which you suspect), then I would measure it again 
under the same conditions directly at the battery to see where the drop is.

Are you tapping in to an existing under-dash accessory fuse or are you 
running some decent sized wire through the firewall directly to the battery?

These would be the first things I would check.
