This is for anyone who wants to know how to widen the TX on the 706.
Here is the ICOM 706 Filter swap mod.
The problem with the 706 is that no matter if you got the filter set to
"W" for wide with the 2.8Kc filter installed, It only RECEIVES at 2.8Kc.
It will always default back to the 2.4Kc filter for transmit. (SSB)
This is how to make it transmit at 2.8Kc.
you have to pull the board out of the rig.
Then you have to unsolder the 2.4 ceramic filter and remove it.
Then clean up the board...you will then notice the plug in 2.8Kc filter
has a different pinout than the solder in 2.4Kc filter.
No problem...you just bend the "ground" pins to the inside of the 2.8Kc
filter..."slightly" inlarge the holes in the PC board to allow the
bigger pins of the 2.8KC filter to go thru.
Place a piece of electrical tape down underneath where the filter will
be settin.
Install the filter and solder the 2 pins, then solder the Filter Case to
ground.
You now have to solder some bigger leads unto the 2.4 filter, and also
bend its ground pins in.
Reason for the bigger leads is so they will ingage the pin sockets.
Place a piece of tape (or the filter insulater that came with the other
filter) where this filter will go.
Install the Filter. It just pushes in.
Re-install the board.
Now the Filter setting are opposite on the rig.
When the rig is in "normal" filter selection, it will actually be "wide"
on recieve and will transmit 2.8Kc.
When you switch it to "W" for wide, you will be in 2.4Kc on recieve and
2.8Kc on transmit.
I also changed the mic element in the Stock mic. The original mic was
real peaky in the 600-2.5Kc region.
I swapped the Radio Shack Electrit element in for it. This element is
Flat from 20cps to 16Kc.
It gave the mic alot more low end.
