[ICOM] wtb IC-781

Hi Dave,

Yes, I believe that the best course would be to wait until the Pro3 has got
past the ARRL Lab test suite and any rev. level upgrades resulting from the
test findings. Typically, I go for a unit with S/N > 2000.

The IC-781 has a fairly serious PSU heat problem. The PSU is a complex
switcher with a shunt regulator, of all things! It is designed for Japanese
100V mains. When powered from 120V mains, the regulator dissipation
increases by a whopping 44%. The power supply typically needs refurbishing
at some point. The inherent heat problem in the power-supply regulator
section causes component and board damage after a number of years. The older
the radio, the more likely this is to occur.

There is a repair procedure on Icom FAQ:

Cheers for now, 73,

Adam... Yes, I think that article emphasizes what I had been thinking.
As nice as the 781 is, one cannot escape the fact that it will be pretty
old, and pretty expensive.
I don't thing there is a big jump from the PRO to PRO2, and probably not
from the 2 to the 3, but it may be worth it for me to jump from the PRO to
the PRO3 when it comes out. This way I avoid the risk of spending $2500 for
a 781 that may have been someone else's nightmare!
Thanks for the article.
Any other thoughts you may have would certainly be helpful!
...Dave
