Hi Greg,

I have had a couple of 746s in the past, and really
liked them, and I currently have an Icom 756 and love
it. I have not heard or experienced those specific
problems you mention with either model. I have a
fairly early serial number 756 (under 2000) and have
had no problems with the display either.

I used to think that the 746 was pretty much a 756
with 2 meters but no dual receive. However, after
getting a 756 I realize that they are different
radios. For one thing, the 756 is easier to use.
Several functions that are buried in menus for the 746
have front panel knobs or buttons on the 756 (like CW
offset). Also, the compression control is on the
front panel on the 756, instead of on the rear panel
for the 746. And the screen on the 756 gives more
information, like which filters are selected at each
IF. Changing filter selection is also easier. I only
wish the 756 had a couple of extra filter slots like
the 746 does.

Also, the dual watch on the 756 is great. makes split
frequency pileups much easier. I also think it will
work great on 6 meter openings. I got mine after the
Es season this year, so havent got to try that yet. I
will be nice to keep the subreceiver on 50.125
listening for new grids, while moving around the band
working other stations. Also, the bandscope is kind
of neat. WIth the 756s screen you can also see what
you have programmed in all 4 CW keyer memories at the
same time. Don't think you can do that with the 746.

I also think the DSP is a little better on the 756,
and the noise blanker seems to work a little better on
line noise. The DSP is very aggressive on the 756,
and you won't want to turn it up more than half way,
or you start to hear digitial artifacts and pops. I
used to turn the DSP NR all the way up on the 746 with
no problem.

Overall, either rig would be a solid choice.
