How true, Jan
I can make as many contacts on my 756Pro as I can with my 706 or with some
of my homebrew stuff that was basically free from junkbox parts. I don't
have to spend 13 grand. A IC-7800 would be nice though. Dunno about the
Yaesu, I've become an Icom brand loyalist in my old age. hehe
That FTDX at Dayton was housed in a ham proof plexiglas box.
It *looked* like a working radio, but who knows.
But for the price of either the 7800 or the new 9000, I could get
a couple of new commercial spec radios with ALE that would be nice
for use with SHARES. (think the Motorola Micom II with ALE is
around $5700 for the ruggedized model, a bit less for the non ruggedized
version. Prices are 5 years old though. The new Micoms are DSP based
and have a darned good RX. A slightly used Harris 5000 series can be
had for much less including ATU. No tuning knob on either, just a keypad :-( )
I'll stick with my Icoms, and other junk, since they work.
