Whether it be Ham, Autos, Guns, Stamps, Antiques, whatever... sure is fun!
I -- about 12 years ago -- by happenstance went to a golf equipment store
with a world-wide famous ham .... he was purchasing a new set of clubs. I'm
no golfer -- at all -- and expected, like ... what, about $500 bux for a
premium set? What would I know, even though my father was a locally famous
greenskeeper (never played a game of golf in his life!) Hmmmmmm ...
Titanium, Graphite, Custom, Angle, etc...... Drivers, $300 ea. -- Woods,
$200 ea. --- Putter, $125 -- Set of Irons, $800 --- Bag, $250 ---now we get
to the CART .. well, you get the idea. How much better score did the
fellow get after hitting that little white pill and chasing it around, using
the super duper stuff, or a set he could have picked up at the church bazaar
for 35 smackerooos.... My point is, don't make fun of what I spend on my
ICOM radios, or any other of the ilk.
Towers, Amps, Antennas, Radios, Accessories... like what I said, ain't it
fun! And, we CAN provide a public service. Not sure how you would do that
with a multi-thousand dollar set of golf clubs! (or 55 Chevy, rare Lincoln
penny, fishing gear, or .. heaven forbid .. a BOAT!) Not knocking at all,
just pointing out ... you who do not see the value in a $13K radio, don't
buy one!  I would, if I could afford.  Wife wants a 57 Chevy though.  =|;?}
(kidding .. had one, went to T Town for Tuck/Roll, in 1963) The ability of
the operator is paramount in working the DX ... Jan has it right .. `tis not
the dollars spent on the radio. My "guess" is that --- given a savvy
op --- 98% of the DX worked could be worked with an IC-735, VS the
IC-whatever. Been there, kinda done that. Howsoever, I'll take the newer
rig, thank you! Did not/do not like a lot of rigs because of their
display --- my 706MKIIG is "OK", but I keep my 736 because it is so easy to
read the fq without putting my reading glasses on my nose. AND .. guess
what .. I work just as many stations as I did with my 746, etc....Just
adding to the noise...Wanted to go to Dayton, XYL said OK, sorry to hear not
as good as B4. BUT my contractor was supposed to start tearing the house
apart... did not happen. Getting a remodel of your home done is quite like
herding cats. 73, Mark AA6DX
