One of my neighbors had a strange encounter with lightning many years
ago.  He bought a rig in Atlanta and got home during an upcoming storm.
He placed the radio on a shelf against an inside wall and went about his
business.  After the storm, he went in to find that lightning had come
in a power outlet on the outside wall, jumped across the room through
the new rig and into the wires in the inside wall.  So there he sat with
a brand new, unopened rig destroyed by lightning. 

While I did not see the rig, I did see the damage on the two walls.

When lightning strikes, there is no real protection.  One can only do
one's best to protect the equipment and if the equipment has any value
at all, insure it!
