[Icom] ICOM 718

Although I don't have an IC-718, a quick look at the manual indicates
that it takes the usual CT-17 control interface in order to talk to a
computer. The CT-17 is expensive, but there are several MUCH less
expensive CI-V adapters available. I use one from Donner's Digital
http://home.att.net/~n8st/rigcontrol.html that costs $25 plus postage.
For rig control software, I use Ham Radio DeLuxe which is "freeware" and
is head and shoulders above its competition. It works with the IC-718
and most other rigs that allow a digital connection to a computer. It
can be found at http://www.ham-radio.ch/forums/index.php You may have
to do a little reading to find your way to the download section, but the
support provided on the forums is excellent.

Next thing you will probably want to do is coordinate your rig control
with logging, DX spotting, propagation prediction, etc. An excellent
suite of programs for these functions is also available as "freeware."
I have found Dave Bernstein's DXLab to far surpass my expectations. The
DXLab programs can "talk" to Ham Radio DeLuxe through a small DDE
program, DXLab HRD Bridge. DXLab is available at
http://www.qsl.net/dxlab/download.htm

You will be amazed with all you can do by pointing and clicking with
your mouse.
