Doug,
I've used a 706 in both a Ford and Chevy. The Ford had a lot more noise,
fuel pump etc.
The Chevy is fairly quiet except for spark plug noise and the noise
blanker does a good job
of getting rid of it in SSB. AM...forget about it. I use a shielded
power cable from the engine
compartment to the back seat. The radio is grounded to the body with
it's mount. My High
Sierra is mounted on the back of the toolbox behind the cab of my truck
and is grounded
to the body with a short 8" strap. That's it. No excessive noise
problems. I never use the
preamp on the lower bands and rarely on the upper ones. In fact on 75
meters I usually also
have the attentuator in line. I've found that the noise blanker works
best when the front end
gain is adjusted for the band and conditions. In other words if you have
the preamp on and no
attentuator on 75 meters the blanker will be of little use. Try
adjusting your front end gain for
the minimum required and see if things don't work and sound better. 73
