Randy,

Last I looked, and it was the IC-207, the receiver front end switched while 
in the air craft frequency range. They also used an existing part as the AM 
detector. I don't know about the IC-208 but would suspect the same scheme 
is being used and doubtful you can switch to am between 230 - 400 MHz.
