[ICOM] Such a Deal

Haven't used the ARRL insurance, but did sign up for the radio/PC insurance
from Ham Radio Insurance Associates. The rates are similar to ARRL
insurance, but I chose them because of a higher rating on eHam and a more
flexible policy. As luck would have it, I was again hit by lightning in May
and am now going through the claim process with the ham insurance co. Will
report back here on how that works out.

As happened with my IC-765 last year, the two transistors in my 781 used to
drive the PC interface port were zapped, as was the transistor that the
built-in keyer uses to key the 781 CW line. Total cost to fix was 81 cents
in parts, but a lot of time in digging out and replacing transistors.

Seems to me that it would be a good idea to use low voltage MOVs on all the
DC and signal lines that plug into the Icom transceiver (other than
antenna). Wonder if anyone else has done that? A separate minibox with
appropriate connectors and MOVs might be the best way to go.
