John,
The IC-761 was also known as the IC-761A. We called it both at Icom, seem
to remember the 761 was the 761A. Most A versions were American versions
except fro the 751A. the " A " designation took on another meaning a low
power version like the IC-275A, IC-25A etc.
Many liked the 761, it held its resale value well after it went out of
production for the 765.
No improved version of the 761 I was ever aware of.
