Bill - likely the RIT encoder (looks like a pot) had the housing pushed in
by the screw and you will probably find that the rotor still contacts the
housing with the shorter screw installed.  The replacement encoder is about
$35 from Icom (still available a couple of months ago), but the installation
is not pleasant.  The old encoder may be salvageable by removing the metal
cover and pressing out the dent.  At any rate, you'd have to remove it
completely to do that.
