The 706IIG is very sensitive particularly on a quite quiet band like 6... Lot of fun on 6m. I can hear the band opening before other guys with the K and the Y rigs. (running a 160 off-center fed dipole for an ant.) I have yet to run mine on 2m SSB or 440 SSB so no comments there. On 20m/mobile, partic on the county hunter net and anywhere where there is a lot of nearby activity going on, the 1.9KHZ SSB filter helps a lot. Without it, this rig is as broad as a Kenwood but more senistive, so you get to hear more up and down the band crap. The PBT is a help there also. (My ref is a well tuned IC-735 with International filters with extremly sharp skirts... GREAT contest rig). On CW, this thing is a lot of fun, and I am no big deal as a CW op at all. Break-in is smooth and at my speeds 20 wpm+/- keying at the standard set-up is perfect. If you are one of these guys who has to have everything... this rig is perfect for back-up of the bigger rigs and mobile and patio-portable work where I run mine on a marine battery into said dipole.

Earphones are just about a must for mobile work. Keeps your passengers as well as yourself sane. Remember the one-ear restriction in many states.

And a word about International Radio filters... they state on their website that their 223 replacements do NOT fit into the 706 and are "Dangerous" in that radio due to lack of space. After the fun I had fitting their filter into the 735. I have the opinion that there is actually more internal room in the 706 but I haven't proved that yet. I would use their filters in a heartbeat if I thought I could. Much sharper than the factory ICOM filters.
