Sounds like RF in the rig to me!
Sorry you are having the problem...

Subject: [ICOM] IC-756 - CW problem - and on Christmas yet!
Calling all 756 experts. I finally decide to get serious about getting
back into CW operation after a LONG hiatus when my IC-756 decides to
give me grief.
Briefly at any power level setting over 40 to 45%, when I attempt to key
the rig from the front panel keyjack using the built-in keyer or the
rear key jack direct, the 756 screen goes to full blue for a moment and
the rig resets itself to the previous mode! All bands, nothing connected
except the key, a dummy load attached to Ant 1, and the 12 vdc
powersupply. Even when I have the tuner disengaged, when the rig comes
back to life I can hear the motors turning as if it is looking for a
match. Shouldn't since I am connected to the dummy load of 50 ohms.
I would love to get the rig going on CW but with my indoor attic W9INN
dipole (good antenna courtesy of the late W9INN but lousy location) I
need all the power I can get from the 756. Anyone ever observe this
behavior and anyone have a suggestion or remedy (other than sell/trade -
already thought of that and the 756 received is still better than 75% of
the current crop of rigs out there).
73 and Merry Christmas,
Carl WCØV
