[ICOM] 7800 vs. PROIII vs?

There could be a number of reasons. For one thing, the Orion is only
one rig at a certain price point. Icom has many rigs, some of which
cost a lot less than the Orion - - (you did say Icom "rigs" - plural --
which covers the entire HF product line). Another factor may be that
Icom sells through dealers while Tentec sells only direct. And from
what I've gathered, Tentec has been hard pressed to make enough Orions
to satisfy the demand it does have so I doubt it could not substantially
increase its sales without increasing the size of the entire
manufacturing line.

I also think the Orion requires a lot more "tinkering" to set it up for
optimal performance under various conditions. The Icoms seem to be much
more plug and play. The Orion has great capability but is probably not
for the casual operator.

And finally, there was little question that the Orion was released with
substantial software bugs which have taken a fairly long time to work
out. But it is getting better and better. I am a long time Icom owner
and fan but I am seriously thinking of getting an Orion because I think
it is an exciting concept that deserves investigation and support.

Why, then, do you suppose they (Ten-Tec Orions) do not sell nearly as
well
as the Icom products ? This is not offered as a "smart remark" , just
genuine curiosity.
As always, 73 to most.
