John:
I don't own a '718, but the following works for most modern Icoms:

Make sure that full break-in is selected in CW mode (usually selectable
from a front panel "soft" key---you won't see this option unless you're
already in CW mode). This should put the radio in transmit each time the key
contacts are closed. If he is using a "BUG", you will need to treat it as if
it were a "STRAIGHT KEY", not paddles (disable the internal keyer). This
setting is probably in the "Initial Set" menu (refer to user's manual).

I hope this helps.

I am trying to help a friend of mine. He is Ted, K6YN, and he will be 100
years old at the end of April.

He just purchased a new IC-718 and is having problems getting it in the CW
mode. He tells me that he must hold the microphone button down in order to
send CW with his bug. He said he read the manual and the only way around
holding the mic button is to install a foot switch.

I am a TenTec owner so I am ignorant of the IC-718 set up.

Can someone please explain how to put the IC-718 in the CW mode so he
doesn't have to hold the mic switch?

A second question, can the IC-718 operate QSK CW? If so, how does one put
it in the QSK mode?

Thanks es 73..de John/K4WJ
