Steve,

You might want to consider installing the cutout. While it is true that the
thermal cutout is there to protect the pack when connected to a rapid
charger, they also protect the pack if the terminals are inadvertently
shorted, such as when the pack is removed from the radio. I am not familiar
with BP3 details, thus whether this is possible on this pack. If so, the
thermal cutout is a good safety feature; NiCD and NiMH packs can deliver
astonishing short-circuit currents - more than enough to start a fire or
cause the cells to rupture if the discharge is sustained.

This reflector was the place to come with my question about the BP3.

Lots of guys wrote (some direct to me and some via the reflector) to
tell me the two-terminal component is a thermal cutout device that has a
function with rapid chargers but not with the wall wart type chargers.

I use a wall wart charger with  a timer and, so, based on the info from
you guys, I'm not going to bother with the thermal cutout.
