[ICOM] IC-765 vs. IC-761

Hi John,

Here are some of the main differences, as I recall:

Synthesiser: 761, PLL (similar to 751A). 765: DDS.

CPU/memory: 761, similar to 751A but with firmware in ROM (if I am not
mistaken). 765: completely new CPU with firmware in ROM and dynamic data in
battery-supported RAM. This allows tuning resolution to 1 Hz vs. 10 Hz on
the IC-761.

ATU: 761: basically an AT-150. 765: microprocessor-controlled high-speed ATU
with tuning-point memory in battery-supported RAM.
IF and SSB filtering: 761, FL-80/FL-44A. IC-765: FL-30/FL-96. 761 has PBT/IF
Shift, stock 765 has IF Shift only.

RF front end: 761, similar to 751A. 765: improved 1st mixer, preamp and RF
baandpass filters for better strong-signal handling.

Gary K8IZ or other list members who have serviced both radios may be able to
expand on this list.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Hi Adam,

But weren't the 761 and 765 pretty close in circuit
design? It is interesting why one got a new number,
whereas the other one got just a letter. I would
think that there would be a bigger difference going
between the 751 and 751A than between the 761 and 765.
