"I have an Icom 756 Pro, which is driving an Alpha 78 amplifier. Several
people have told me on the air that I need a relay box to keep the amp
from feeding current back into the 756 and frying its relays."
==========
The Alpha 78 has +24VDC on the keyline when it is unkeyed. The
IC-756Pro2 manual states that the maximum voltage that can be safely
controlled is 16VDC.
With this warning, I searched the Web and found just the device to
protect the send relay in my 756Pro2. It connects between the "send"
jack of the 756 and the relay jack of the anm and it operates from the DC
voltage on the keyline from the amp, so it requires no other supply
voltage. It's called a "relay saver" and is sold for $24.95 by
Sultantronics. I figured that this was far less expensive than having
the relay contacts in the radio getting pitted due to arcing and then
paying the repair bill.
I bought the Sultantronics LVP model which is good for keyline voltages
up to 60VDC and it works flawlessly with my Pro2 and FT-1000MP for keying
my Alpha 76CA (same as the Alpha 78 but without autotune). You can visit
their Web site at http://www.sultantronics.com for more info.
No kinship here with Sultantronics -- just a happy user.
