Something to try.

The next time your mobile won't work properly without the engine running.
Remove the cover and measure the voltage in the radio when it is keyed in CW
mode. It will surprise you. The voltage drop in the connectors, fuses, and
power cable will typically be on the order of 1- 1.5 volts and that is under
ideal conditions. This puts a typical 12.8v battery down to the 11v range.
Normally what I have observed is that HF mobiles will operate down to 11v,
below that all bets are off. So if  there is a faulty connection  the
voltage can drop over 3-4 volts and it doesn't work.

Things to check for;
1. The inline fuses supplied by most Japanese mfg. have soldered ends. After
a period of use the solder will crystallize and increase the resistance and
the voltage drop. Replace them with good fuses.
2. Check the connections to the fuse holders, solder them if they are not
already.
3. Tighten the pins in the connectors, they spread with age (like most
adults) and cause problems. While there make sure the pins are soldered to
the wire.
4. Clean the battery connections regularly. You did connect straight to the
battery didn't you? Connections is plural meaning both positive and negative
go straight to the battery.

All of this should minimize the drop and allow the radio to work on just the
battery.
