[Icom] Introduction of the IC-7800

The gentleman is making a feeble effort at wry humor based upon Icom's
progression from the 756 to the PRO to the PRO2.

The Ten Tec lads especially like to draw attention to the fact that their
radios are updated by a firmware download - so far - while ours embody
improvements in new, more expensive models. On the flip side, very seldom do
our radios come out of the box with software bugs and features that don't
work. New models have historically represented substantial improvemements in
performance as well as refinements in features. very seldom have actual
problems required correction with a new model.

I *do* however expect that there will be a 785 II or whatever will be called
that will be a "civilian" version of the 7800, but in the $4K price range. I
expect it to be announced at Dayton next year. It will likely comprise
essentially two advanced PRO2's with the 7800-style front end and a 100 watt
output amp, following the basic architecture of the 7800.

The 7800 while presently a physical monster and possibly substantial
performance overkill for the amateur market is basically a considerably
simpler architecture that the PRO2 with its double conversion a la the K2.
This results in considerably less circuitry and fewer parts, boards, etc.
and should allow lower production costs as well.

If the ORION remains in production - quality and "bug" issues finally laid
to rest - then Icom will surely produce a price-point competitor with
superior specs. "Son of 7800" will be that radio. And most of us will have
to wait until then . . .

So much for crystal ball gazing - but it *is* fun!

the initial introduction of the IC-7800, Icom will introduce the IC-7800
Mark II. The Mark II will have an improved noise blanker and a slightly
different color scheme for the LCD display. The new radio will be in the
$15,000 to $20,000 class. I only bring this up, so that those of you who
are contemplating purchasing the original model, may want to wait 6 months
for the introduction of the Mark II. It looks like it will be a huge
improvement over the original model.
