Somehow this got on to the reflector it was supposed to be private,
but since you asked.
Old Pierre was given the "right" to transport people across the
Mississippi - which was darn near impossible, and depending upon Pierre's
mood, the price would vary. He had a reputation for equating his mood with
the price.
A very interesting and colorful fellow. There is still a place just north
of St. Louis that is dedicated to him.
One of the biggest characters - and he made no bones about it. I think he
loved being a scoundrel.
