I am certain if the 380 were to be introduced today, it would be much
improved over the original unit. However, given the changes in prices now
as when the 380 was introduced, I would bet the 380 prices would not be less
than the IC-7800. Maybe in some respects it might be close to comparable.
But, when you look at the brochure and as Greg, W9GB has mentioned with all
the "stuff" on the rear panel.the 7800 is gonna be one #$$% of a rig.
Would it compare to a Collins nowadays with a 110db dynamic range? Good
question. But, you cannot compare eggs to apples and you can bet the
Collins would not be cheap...more than the 7800? Better believe it.
Bill, WR0T has shown us some good numbers with his comparisons and has found
one of the real problems with the 380...noise floor. Solid State devices do
have an inherent problem built in, and how you solve it determines how well
the rig will perform. But..110db dynamic range...wow.!
