Hi Mike -
I have found the 2720 to be a nice, well laid-out radio
that works pretty well in most respects. But it has a
number of annoying design glitches... more than it
should have. It gives the impression that at some point
Icom just decided to push it out the door, ready or not.
The Tx audio is one of those glitches. For reasons unknown,
Icom decided to provide TWO Tx audio settings:
(1) Normal, and (2) Does Not Work. One could question
the value of including setting (2) at all. But the kicker is--
you guessed it--they made (2) the DEFAULT. Sheesh!
So tell your friend not to despair, just get into the menus
and change the Tx audio setting. BTW, I had seen this
problem discussed in the eHam.net reviews before
I bought the radio, so I was ready for it. (But a few of
the other little nasties caught me by surprise.) One can
learn a lot by reading those eHam.net reviews, unlike the
(sadly) absolutely worthless QST reviews.
